Curiocity Joburg has a history closely linked to the country’s own. It was the premises of the Pacific Press during the apartheid era, which published material for the ANC and Black Sash and is said to have offered refuge to struggle stalwarts like Mandela and Slovo. In the heart of the vibey Maboneng precinct, it’s now the perfect base for exploring the culture, history and creativity of the city.

Curiocity is a network of African design hostels, sharing an authentic experience of this continent, one city at a time. We want to connect the curious traveller to what’s exciting, inspiring and real in whichever location we’re in. As an accessible, design hostel offering we give travellers the chance to stay in spaces that are not only affordable but also amazingly designed to.

We tend to choose locations outside of the expected tourist areas, giving our guests a local’s experience of a destination. And we take this commitment to our cities to heart, partnering with local businesses, designers and individuals to make every Curiocity experience a unique one.

Curiocity is for the young and not so young, the global traveller and the local visitor, for a quick stop-over and a deep dive into the city. So when you’re planning your next trip to our part of the world, book your spot at one of our locations. We’ll save a space for you at the bar.

Amazing location and staff! You’re right in the heart of Maboneng which is where art galleries, street art, cool cafes/restaurants/bars are. It’s the heart of the creative Joburg. It was amazing to be located directly there, on fox street. It’s full of life and especially music on weekends! The hostel was very comfy, nice kitchen and bathrooms and staff was lovely 💫

Best service. Last year in August, I went to Johannesburg for my bachelorette party with my friends, and we planned to do the Soweto tour. It was incredible! The guide was one of the smartest people I’ve ever met, he explained everything so clearly and with such passion that it made the whole experience even more meaningful. You could really feel the emotion and energy in the way he shared the history and culture with us.

I came in winter and the rooms were cold. They gave me a heater but it did not help. The rooms are super clean but the large windows let the cold in. Some of the windows wouldn't close all the way. The water was hot buy getting out of the shower to a cold bath room you have to use to fast. And sitting on a cold toilet was because everything is open to the cold. So if you like the Cold you will be OK but if not only come in the summer The way the building built it nothing they can do about it. The staff was good. They have a large Bar but it was open to the public so it will be full of people who didn't stay at the Hostal . They would show up at 11am to start Drinking. But they were not walkable to people staying at the Hostal. Most were men from the Out side Drinking from 11am to 2am and it would be full on Friday and Saturday nights. Hard to find a seat if you stay at the Hostal. If I was a women I would think before stay around the Bar area. If you go out to the left lots of local Clubs that are packed with SA but they were there to party not to met foreigners. A very young group. But street has lots of good restaurants and shopping. But stay on that street it long has a lot to offer day and night. IF YOU STEP OF THAT STREET YOU COULD BE MUGGED OR LOSE YOUR LIFE. I talked to the Bolt and Uber divers they said I was crazy to stay there. But to say on that one street. I moved to Sandton after my 3 days were up. Good cheap Breakfast. Also it is crazy loud on the weekends. So bring ear plugs. Are just stay awake or out till 3am.

This hostel is quite basic. The common areas have a cool, preserved style that matches the area. The rooms are very basic and cold. The bathrooms are also quite worn out, but the water is hot. However, the environment is still cold. I had my money stolen from my passport case which was left inside my luggage in their luggage room. This happened after a staff member strongly advised me to leave all my valuables and documents in there.

The hostel is in a arty sceeny area. Apparently the street it lays in is safe. It seemed busy but we walked on the street and felt safe but wouldnt walk further. Depending on which room you have it can get loud at night due to the bar downstairs which is mainly visited by locals. The kitchen works well Its a goof place to go as a backpacker (not many hostels in joburg) but you can find cheaper options or safer areas if you dont want a hostel
