However, the landscape has evolved significantly, propelling visionary individuals who dared to dream into the international spotlight, and putting Africa at the forefront of the fashion world.

Laduma Ngxololo (MaXhosa)
From a tender age, Laduma Ngxololo, guided by his mother’s teachings, birthed a dream that paved the way for creating Maxhosa, a renowned knitwear brand. Laduma draws heavily from Xhosa beadwork, symbolism, and vibrant colours, proudly presenting these influences to the world. His distinctive style has not only captivated local audiences but has also graced international stages, with Hollywood celebrities showcasing his brand on the illustrious red carpet.
Palesa Mokubung (Mantsho Label)
Hailing from Kroonsland, Free State, Palesa Mokubung earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design at Vanderbijipark Technical College. Following three years as an in-house fashion designer for Stoned Cherrie, she won a competition that took her to New York and Mumbai for six months. Inspired by the experience, she founded the Mantsho Label in 2004, meaning “black is beautiful.” Since then, her brand has graced runways in Greece, India, Nigeria, Jamaica, and the USA.
Mzukisi Mbane (Imprint):
A self-taught designer hailing from Khayelitsha, Mzukisi Mbane, driven by an unwavering desire to leave a lasting impression in the world of fashion, aptly named his brand Imprint. Every line he releases tells a compelling story, skillfully incorporating his mother’s qualities into intricately designed pieces.
Wandile Zondo and Galebowe Mahlatsi (Thesis Lifestyle):
Born to factory workers in Soweto, Wandile Zondo refused to let financial constraints hinder his dreams. Starting from an entry-level position at Edgars, he immersed himself in continuous learning, reading books, and submitted a thesis at the University of the Witwatersrand. Both driven by the same passion to display Soweto’s style to the world, it led these two friends down a path of establishing a Thesis Lifestyle. A brand heavily influenced by township life, focusing on positive lifestyle and social impact.
Rich Mnisi (RICH MNISI)
Born in Kempton Park, Rich Mnisi, was named Africa Fashion International Young Designer of the Year in 2014. He launched his label in 2015 and draws inspiration from his Tsonga culture, heritage, and influences from film, music, art, and nature, Mnisi’s contemporary style navigates life’s complexities, exploring the coexistence and interaction of the old and new, dark and light.
