Table service was superb. Menu was accommodating to diet restrictions. Very chill vibes yet has an upmarket atmosphere. Perfect for a date or a company dinner. Definitely worth the visit.

To say I was disappointed would be an understatement, especially because I spent 2 years planning to go there for my birthday because I love the aesthetics of the establishment. The service we got from our waiter was the worst, he was absent minded and looked like he didn't even want to serve us. No introduction or explanation of the menu and it's content, we had to figure on our own what was on the menu and what it could possibly be, we even resorted to using Google because he looked bored when we asked him questions... Worst service of my life... The food was just alright, I only enjoyed the lamb chops and the cocktails.. The rest was just Bland and lacked flavour. There's great potential for the establishment to grow if the staff can change their attitude and focus on giving customers a great service... Otherwise the place is gorgeous. Left a huge lump on my throat and ruined my birthday but hey.... There might be a better experience next time.

I celebrated my birthday with a lunch at 1947 on Vilakazi Street, and I couldn’t have chosen a better spot. From start to finish, it was nothing short of amazing—warm hospitality, rich flavors, and an atmosphere that made the day feel extra special. The setting is elegant, right in the heart of Vilakazi Street, which already gives the place a sense of history and pride. The food? Absolutely phenomenal. My brother and I had the mogodu with dombolo, and it was melt-in-your-mouth tender—comforting, hearty, and packed with flavour. My husband and my brother’s girlfriend ordered burgers ( I tasted the chips and for me personally the best chips I ever tasted) and everyone was raving at the table. For drinks the guys ordered theirs and we had a purple cocktail (completely forgot the name of the cocktail but it was nice, a bit too sweet but nice) Our waiter was so friendly and attentive without hovering, and it really felt like we were being taken care of by someone who wanted us to enjoy the moment. Price-wise, everything felt worth it—generous portions, great cocktails, and the overall experience made it feel like a celebration in every sense. If you’re looking for a place to make a birthday feel special—delicious food, great vibes, and true South African hospitality—1947 is the one. I left full, happy, and already planning a return

I visited 1947 on Vilakazi Street, and it was hands down one of the best meals I've ever had. Every dish was bursting with flavor, perfectly cooked, and beautifully presented. The lamb chops were tender and juicy, the ribs were incredibly flavorful, and the sides were just as impressive—crispy fries, creamy mashed potatoes, and fresh vegetables that complemented the meal perfectly. The ambiance of the restaurant was vibrant and welcoming, making the experience even more enjoyable. The service was top-notch, with attentive and friendly staff who made sure everything was perfect from start to finish. I would revisit Johannesburg from Canada just to eat here again—that's how good it was. If you're looking for a restaurant that delivers exceptional food and a fantastic dining experience, 1947 on Vilakazi is an absolute must-visit! Highly recommended, and I can't wait to return!

Get out of the burbs and have a great culinary and social experience in Soweto! The food was beautifully presented by their young chef (if only a tad over-seasoned for my palate); cocktails delicious; service was good. I'd go back.
