Curiocity Joburg has a history closely linked to the country’s own. It was the premises of the Pacific Press during the apartheid era, which published material for the ANC and Black Sash and is said to have offered refuge to struggle stalwarts like Mandela and Slovo. In the heart of the vibey Maboneng precinct, it’s now the perfect base for exploring the culture, history and creativity of the city.

Curiocity is a network of African design hostels, sharing an authentic experience of this continent, one city at a time. We want to connect the curious traveller to what’s exciting, inspiring and real in whichever location we’re in. As an accessible, design hostel offering we give travellers the chance to stay in spaces that are not only affordable but also amazingly designed to.

We tend to choose locations outside of the expected tourist areas, giving our guests a local’s experience of a destination. And we take this commitment to our cities to heart, partnering with local businesses, designers and individuals to make every Curiocity experience a unique one.

Curiocity is for the young and not so young, the global traveller and the local visitor, for a quick stop-over and a deep dive into the city. So when you’re planning your next trip to our part of the world, book your spot at one of our locations. We’ll save a space for you at the bar.

The hostel has a cool atmosphere and a very receptive and lively staff, the price is attractive, but leaves something to be desired in several areas. The region is not a good place to stay, it is very dangerous and you cannot walk the streets freely. You are literally staying inside the club! It's the party street in Johannesburg and you have to know that it will be difficult to sleep and rest. The hostel itself holds its parties with music and bands at very high volumes. Can't sleep. You need to go to the party. There is a frequent lack of energy and consequently water. We needed to shower in another place the two nights we stayed there. It was terrible. They say it's due to Load Shedding, but that's not all, as there are other places where there is no shortage of water. Bathrooms are not very clean. If you want to meet people, make friends and always be at the party, ok, but if you want minimal comfort, a clean bathroom with water, a place to rest and safety, this is not your place.

It is very nice and cool place actually. If you like music, dance and want to learn about Johannesburg culture of arts it is the place. Communal kitchen is big, kitchenware is good. Bar is cool. There is little restaurant inside and cook is great and the food is tasty. The only thing I did not like is the loud music that keeps going on.

The best customer service cleaning staff ever! I stayed here for a while and watched them carefully tidy up the busy beds every day, which made my stay very comfortable! Because they are there, this youth hostel is worth 5 stars.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

The staff at Curiocity Johannesburg is great. Fantastic. Outstanding. Tomoku (sorry if I spelled that wrong) is the heart and soul of the positive energy of Curiosity Johannesburg. His smile and caring personality make everyone feel welcome. Even this old traveler. The price of the dorm rooms is very affordable but the price of everything else is way too high. I was going to be charged ZAR500 for a transport from the airport and an Uber was ZAR140. A meal at Curiocity was more than a nice restaurant two blocks away and the food was better at the restaurant. I strongly recommend staying at Curiocity but be selective about the services you purchase. I also want to compliment the two ladies in the office whose names i.dont't know. They were also very kind to me. I am staying at Curiocity two more nights while I'm in Johannesburg due to the excellent customer service I received. Tom Dammer

Super friendly and helpful staff. They do a great job with helping you mix in and enjoy the local scene. Lots of cool people and energy in the area to feel inspired by the culture, learn about the history, and appreciate the beauty of the community.
