Curiocity Joburg has a history closely linked to the country’s own. It was the premises of the Pacific Press during the apartheid era, which published material for the ANC and Black Sash and is said to have offered refuge to struggle stalwarts like Mandela and Slovo. In the heart of the vibey Maboneng precinct, it’s now the perfect base for exploring the culture, history and creativity of the city.
Curiocity is a network of African design hostels, sharing an authentic experience of this continent, one city at a time. We want to connect the curious traveller to what’s exciting, inspiring and real in whichever location we’re in. As an accessible, design hostel offering we give travellers the chance to stay in spaces that are not only affordable but also amazingly designed to.
We tend to choose locations outside of the expected tourist areas, giving our guests a local’s experience of a destination. And we take this commitment to our cities to heart, partnering with local businesses, designers and individuals to make every Curiocity experience a unique one.
Curiocity is for the young and not so young, the global traveller and the local visitor, for a quick stop-over and a deep dive into the city. So when you’re planning your next trip to our part of the world, book your spot at one of our locations. We’ll save a space for you at the bar.

5 months agoThe staff are super helpful with information. The hostel vibe was amazing and the common areas are beautiful with enough sitting areas. I loved that there was a common area only for residents. The staff are really concerned about the safety of their guests. Disliked · The music at the nearby bars play until very late and it can affect sleep. The safety and security ⚠️ warnings got me really scared of exploring the area, but that is not the hostel's fault.
